Incorporating and Facilitating In-Class Group Work: Demo and Workshop, CTLO Fall Seminar

Research has shown that students acquire and retain knowledge most effectively by engaging in collaborative-learning groups with peers. In this workshop, participants will explore fostering collaborative learning with in-class, structured group work. Participants will learn how to structure and facilitate in-class group activities that can help students become more involved in their own learning. The session will include a demonstration, allowing participants to experience what it's like to be in a university STEM class with facilitated group work and reflect on how to adopt effective teaching practices for this type of learning.

Bio: Gina Frey is the Florence E. Moog Professor of STEM Education in Chemistry and the Co-Director of the Center for Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning, and Education (CIRCLE) at Washington University. Gina has led Washington University's Teaching Center since 2002. She teaches multiple courses including General Chemistry and Women in Science. Gina's work focuses on implementing and evaluating collaborative-learning pedagogies and other active-learning strategies that improve student learning and help students in STEM to transition to college-level learning. More recently her work has expanded to include studying social-psychology innovations designed to promote and create an inclusive environment and sense-of-belonging in STEM courses for all students, but specifically for students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields.
Gina received her B.S. degree, summa cum laude, in chemistry and mathematics from Clarion State University in Pennsylvania and her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Utah. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Indiana University working with Ernest Davidson. Before joining the Department of Chemistry in 1994, Gina was employed as a scientific-support specialist, first with IBM and then with a scientific-software company Biosym Technologies. Gina has been PI or co-PI on numerous education grants from the Luce Foundation, Teagle Foundation, Association of American Universities, National Science Foundation, HP, and most recently, as PI, received an HHMI grant for Inclusive Excellence in Science.
